BLACK CATS
The highly collectible Black Cats (also known as Kitchen Cats or Useful Cats) were produced in Japan from the 1930s to the early 1960s for the Shafford Company, which produced other ceramic animals as well, but none so popular as the Black Cats. These cats are always made of red ceramic clay with a black glaze and trimmed with red ears, green eyes, and a red bow and/or a necktie. Although some were merely decorative like the panther or the mother cat and kitten sets, most of the Black Cats were utilitarian, like bookends, letter holders, and ash trays (the Useful Cats) or were designed for the cook, such as spice holders, salt and pepper shakers, teapots, and toothpick holders (the Kitchen Cats). The Black Cats had a revival in popularity in the 70s and 80s but today are much harder to find, especially the more unique shapes. They remain of course as adorable as ever and loved by avid collectors of cat items. All Cats Are Legends is proud to offer a sampling of the Black Cats from its own private collection.
